16/06/2011: Summer's Here! Time to Celebrate!

Summer has finally hit Liverpool and at Fishlocks, we think now is the perfect time to get out into the garden and spare a thought for our insect friends.
There are over 1 billion bees in the world, and the UK has 25 species alone! Bees have been nurturing plants and flowers, not to mention producing delicious honey for us humans, for the last 150 million years.
The average bee will pollinate 50-100 flowers in a single session, and use the pollen they collect to feed the whole hive. The work that bees do is absolutely vital to the reproduction of plants. Without bees, the plants would simply die without reproducing which would be an absolute tragedy.
Unfortunately, bees are curently under threat from an unidentified source which is having a devastating effect on entire hives. If this continues, it could have severe consequences for the wider environment.
But don’t worry, because you can help with the problem in your own garden. Scientists believe that one of the main issues affecting bees is the lack of scented flowers like lavender in people’s gardens. Bees love the smell of lavender and it attracts large numbers of them, as well as other insects such as butterflies, into the garden.
Lavender also smells great, and that's why we include it in many of our Summer Bouquet Designs! Click here to see our summer designs. Take a moment to spare a thought for our insect friends this summer. After all, without them, there'd be no beautiful flowers for Fishlocks!
